  It supports vocabulary development.

  Words are a big deal, they are huge, they play a large part in how people perceive your ability to communicate. Minspeak gives young or cognitively challenged individuals easy access to simple words, but also helps children and adults grow in their vocabulary by giving them synonyms like huge and large.  That's one way that Minspeak supports vocabulary development.  Another way is by organizing words into word families.  Look at the ELEPHANT word family.  Word families build logical relationships between word meanings - another step on the road to vocabulary developement.

  Any communication system used must do more than just represent the bare bones of language. It must promote growth and development.  A special advantage of Minspeak is that you can use it for basic, functional communication and grow all the way with it to talking in complete sentences.  Minspeak gives you all the tools you need for learning language.

  It coordinates with literacy development.

  Minspeak and literacy are both rule-driven systems.  To talk with Minspeak, a person learns a small set of graphics - called icons - and uses them in sequences to say words.  In order to read and write, a person learns a small set of graphics - called letters - and uses them in sequences to build words.  The process of learning Minspeak coordinates with the process of literacy development.  By using Minspeak, a person is building the vocabulary and language needed to develop literacy.

  It promotes classroom participation with real language.

  Children using Minspeak in both special and general education classes are able to participate in the classroom with teachers and peers.  Using core vocabulary in their Minspeak system, they actively talk in class.  For example, whether doing a cooking activity in a preschool special education class or a science experiment about rocks in a 5th grade general education class, the student using a Minspeak system can say "get the big one," "get the biggest one," "don't put in that," or "it's my turn now."  Using real language, they are active learners!
